Coach Dan Benson
February 5, 1926 ~ February 15, 2019

Above: The family of Dan Benson at the ceremony dedicating the plaque honoring Coach Dan Benson. Benson [Shown below right at the 2018 Dan Benson Invitational] had been a fixture in Wauwatosa and Wauwatosa West athletics for over 50 years. Coach Benson died on February 15th of this year. As head coach at Wauwatosa West from 1961-1987, he established the Trojan Athletic Club Track Invitational which evolved into the Dan Benson Invitational after he retired. The meet will now be named the Memorial Dan Benson Track and Field Invite. Large photo of the plaque honoring Dan Benson.

This years meet is the 39th annual Dan Benson Invitational. Dan assisted in football and track at Wauwatosa High School and went to Wauwatosa West when it opened in 1961. Benson still attended track meets at West after he retired and the photo on the right was taken at last years Dan Benson Invitational. At that meet Benson related that in 1961 all Tosa West had was a field to hold track meets. Now the West facility has an artificial soccer/football field surrounded by an all weather track in school colors.
