Snow Challenges ~ Track and Field

Monday, March 11, 2019. River Ridge Track At Bloomington MS

Those schools with field houses and extra gym space can adjust. But what happens when those options are not available? Coach Shane Sperle at River Ridge High School had the answer as he executed a plan to clear the track of its deep snow cover. In western Wisconsin the snow has been significant. And smaller towns without fully plowed streets and sidewalks give little opportunity for safe outside workouts. Sperle had the answer though. Custodian Lester Breuer [above left] came to rescue by plowing the track giving the athletes a safe venue to run on. Athletes will shovel the stairs leading to the track to complete the plan. Progress made in clearing the track on Monday, March 11. Even with warmer weather on the way the depth of the snow would have prevented a timely melt.
Memories: In 2012 Wisconsin Track Online made a preseason visit to Saint Mary's Springs High School on March 8.
The coach at that time Shane Smith and his runners had shoveled one lane that was open for running.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2012, Wisconsin Track Online visited River Ridge High School to cover the Timber Wolves track meet. The photos showing 'green' are from that meet. In contrast to the snow covered field shown on the right that day in April was ideal for a meet. Above middle: Athletes put the 'finishing touches' on clearing the track.
THINK SPRING!
