Temperatures remained cold on Day 3 of the 2021 season. Wisconsin Track Online visited D3 Co-Op Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg for their preseason practice. Beginning in 2013 the Co-Op finished 18th at the State Meet. After that the 'BSMS' team has had Top 10 finishes at the State Meet including a Team State Championship in 2018. BSMS has had a variety of State Medalists and individual State Champions in the throws, hurdles, relays, and middle and long distance events. Brittany Davis a former BSMS athletes who holds the D3 800m record [2015] is now a coach in the Benton School district. |

Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg [none of the schools have a track facility]. Division: 3. Enrollment: 61+106+69. Head Coach: Paul Raley. 42nd year coaching track and field. Coached @ Benton Head boys/girls from 1979 - 1987, 2 conference championships (first in school's history). Coached @ UW Platteville 1987-1989 Head Cross Country, ast Track - took men's team to NAIA National CC Meet in 1988. Coached @ Lancaster as ast. coach 1990, 1991( boys 2nd @ State ) Then as head boys/girls coach 1993, 1994 ( boys 3rd @ State ), 1995 - (Boys conference champs, 6th @ state), Volunteer coach @ Fennimore 1992, 1996-2006 - 12 years. Started the track program at Benton in 2007 - went into a Co-Op with Scales Mound (first time they ever had track) 2011 - then added Shullsburg in 2013 to form the current Tri-Op. He was an assistant coach when BSMS was D3 State Champion in 2018. BSMS is the defending 2019 Six Rivers Conference Champion. Conference Six Rivers: Albany, Argyle/Pecatonica, Belmont, Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg, Black Hawk, Cassville/Potosi and River Ridge. |

| Junior Kayci Martensen is shown at the 2019 WIAA State Meet. She finished 2nd in the 800m and won the 1600m and 3200m races. After finishing 3rd at the 2018 D2 WIAA State XC Meet she won the D2 2019 and 2020 WIAA State XC Championships. In XC she competed for the Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton Co-Op team. In track she competes in D3 with the Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg Co-Op team. | ||

| After a warmup on hurdles inside the team took a lap around the campus [there is no track at Benton]. Then back inside a variety of stretching and then line running drills were run before the team broke up into groups. Wednesday the emphasis was on field events. | ||

| The Throw Ring is on a cement patio outside the middle school gym. The throws go down a steep hill beind the middle shcool giving the throw athletes a bonus workout when they retrieve their throws. | ||

| During warmups inside the vaulters trained using pipes to simulate the poles they will use outside. Benton does not have a track. However a generous boaster club drive raised the funds to purchase a PV pit and then built the runway to the pit. Athletes new to field events met with Coach Raley outside. Fundamentals of body position and foot landing position were stressed. | ||
